Kataragama
Kataragama, a concealed city revered by Sri Lankan Buddhists and Hindus alike, lies nestled in the Monaragala district within the Uva province. A pivotal historical element of this city is the ancient Kiriwehera Buddhist stupa, erected during the 6th century in the reign of King Mahasen. Behind the Kiriwehera stands a revered Boo tree, one of the eight saplings derived from the sacred Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
Adding to the city’s significance, many Hindu devotees residing in Sri Lanka converge upon Kataragama to worship at the Hindu Kovil, especially during the month of July. This period witnesses a traditional perahera, a procession, conducted by both Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims, further emphasizing the inclusive nature of this sacred city.
