Kandy

Kandy, serving as the capital of the central province, holds historical significance as the final capital during the ancient kings’ era in Sri Lanka. Renowned for the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which once served as the palace of the last king, Sir Vikrama Rajasinha, Kandy was honored with UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988. The erstwhile royal palace has transformed into a museum.

Among the architectural gems in Kandy is the Lankathilaka Temple, a stellar example of traditional Sinhalese temple design situated atop a rock. Inside, a monumental seated Buddha image graces the temple’s interior. Kandy is also globally acclaimed for its traditional event, the Esala Perahara, a major parade that takes place annually. This grand procession involves the majestic display of one of the inner caskets used to enshrine the Buddha’s tooth relic, carried through the city streets atop a royal tusker. The Esala Perahara, held in July or August, captivates the hearts of Sri Lankans and attracts large crowds from across the country and around the world, making it a truly glorious and touching occasion.

Peradeniya

Peradeniya is renowned for the Royal Botanical Gardens, situated on the slopes of the Mahaweli River, drawing visitors from around the globe to this well-known garden. This 147-acre expanse also serves as the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka, housing a diverse collection of flora. Notably, it is celebrated for its extensive assortment of orchids among its 4,000 plant species, which include spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. Maintained by the Division of National Botanic Gardens within the Department of Agriculture, the garden showcases a multitude of plant species that are unique to Sri Lanka.

Adding to Peradeniya’s significance is the presence of the University of Peradeniya, the second oldest university in Sri Lanka. The university’s architectural style reflects a blend of Sri Lankan tradition and South Asian influences. Surrounded by mountain ranges, the captivating and valuable Hanthana Mountain stands as a prominent feature. Additionally, the ancient town of Kadugannawa is located in the western part of the town, adding a historical dimension to the area.
